Late Recurrence of a Cardiac Glomus Tumor

Abstract: Glomus tumors, also known as paragangliomas or chemodectomas, arise from well-differentiated mesenchymal cells that are known to be benign. These tumors account for 2% of all soft tissue tumors. The first case of a cardiac glomus tumor was reported in 1924 by Masson.1 Glomus tumors located within the pericardial tissue are extremely rare. We present the case of a recurrent cardiac glomus tumor. The preoperative investigation, diagnostic problems and surgical treatment of this case will be highlighted. Moreover… Show more

“…It is usually a small neoplasm that not exceeding 1 cm in diameter and located most commonly in the subungual region of the fingers in the distal extremities. It may also occur at the skin, subcutaneous fat and rarely in visceral organs [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16].…”

“…Tumor size, mitotic activity and location, have been shown to be the major parameters correlating with the biological behavior of these tumors [4]. In such cases the clinical course of the disease cannot be readily anticipated, thus making the therapeutic approach difficult [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. To our knowledge, this is the only known case of glomus tumor with multiple organ involvement and aggressive biological behavior at presentation.…”

“…To our knowledge, this is the fourth glomus tumor case to be reported originating from the heart, and a first in this institution. [9][10][11] Typical glomus tumors are well-circumscribed lesions composed of capillary-sized vessels enclosed by cuffs of glomus cells. 7 These are subdivided into three categories; solid glomus tumor, glomangioma, or glomangiomyoma, which is dependent upon the composition of vascular structures, smooth muscle cells, glomus cells and their varying proportions.…”
