Late Eocene to Holocene Diatom Biostratigraphy of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 85

Abstract: Excellent reference sections for lower Oligocene through Holocene diatoms were recovered at DSDP Sites 572 to 575 in the central equatorial Pacific. Diatoms are generally common and well preserved at all sites, except in the upper Oligocene. These sections are zoned and correlated on the basis of diatoms, including the identification and correlation of 89 additional secondary datum levels in the Miocene and Pliocene. Paleomagnetic stratigraphy was obtained for the entire Denticulopsis nicobarica Zone (17.8 to … Show more

“…All samples contained N. reinholdii as well as Pseudoeunotia doliolus, constraining them to the period between 0.65 and 1.8 Ma (Baldauf, 1984;Barron, 1985). These data agree with both nannofossil and planktonic foraminifer datums.…”

“…The F0 of C. sawamurae at Site 887 thus is slightly older that the Chron C5Dn correlation reported by Barron (1985) (as C. nicobarica) at equatorial Pacific Ocean DSDP Site 575, but this age is in accord with the correlations of Baldauf et al (1987) at DSDPSite 610 in the North Atlantic.…”

“…Recientemente, López García (1993) y López García y Bustillo (1994) han realizado un amplio estudio litológico y bioestratigráfico de estos sedimentos y han definido en ellos tres episodios, cuya edad fue determinada por aplicación de la biozonación de diatomeas de Barron (1985), definida en el Pacífico ecuatorial, teniendo en cuenta la adaptación de ésta al Atlánti-co norte efectuada por Baldauf (1986).…”
