Abstract: Study of ammonites and bivalves along selected sections on the Andean margin of northern Peru and Ecuador has made it possible to recognize correlatable marine transgressions and to propose a refined stratigraphic framework for the Upper Cretaceous of the region. Six maximum flooding events are recognized: latest Turonian-early Coniacian (major event), late Coniacian-early Santonian, late Santonian-early Campanian, mid Campanian-early late Campanian (major event), early Maastrichtian (major event), and termina… Show more

“…5): -the first, the older one, corresponds to the Middle Member (Actaeonella Limestone) of the La Mesa Formation ascribed to the Middle Campanian (Taipe et al, 2000;Jaillard et al, 2003). Rudists are very abundant, but they are unfortunately poorly preserved, due to high energy conditions that prevailed during their deposition.…”

“…The unconformable, transgressive Campanian-Maastrichtian sequence in the Celica-Lancones Basin appears to rest on the Albian volcanic arc in the east, deformed Cretaceous sediments in the central part, and Paleozoic basement or Albian transgressive limestones in the west (Olsson 1934;Kennerley, 1973;Morris and Alemán, 1975;Jaillard et al, 2005). The uppermost Cretaceous sequence comprises, from base to top (Fig.…”

“…These breccias are disconformably overlain by lower Maastrichtian transgressive shoreline sandstones, which grade into shallow clastic shelf breccias and sandstones (Cenizo Formation). Paleocene marine marls unconformably overlie the Maastrichtian sandstones (Taipe et al, 2004;Jaillard et al, 2005).…”
