Laser Microperforation Assisted Drug-Elution from Biodegradable Films

Abstract: In a modern high-tech medicine, drug-eluting polymer coatings are actively used to solve a wide range of problems, including the prevention of post-surgery infection, inflammatory, restenosis, thrombosis and many other implant-associated complications. For major assumptions, the drug elution mechanism is considered mainly to be driven by the degradation of the polymer matrix. This process is very environmentally dependent, unpredictable and often leads to a non-linear drug release kinetic. In the present work,… Show more

“…The PTMFs were made using PLA biopolymer because PLA has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for human use and has also demonstrated potential for the production of patterned films. , Due to its significant hydrophobic properties, this polymer is highly suitable for the effective packing and retention of low-molecular-weight substances. , Our previous research has demonstrated that PLA microchamber arrays exhibit excellent resistance to mechanical deformation and better retention of FITC-dextran and Solumedrol (methylprednisolone sodium succinate) in saline solution than other hydrophobic polymers such as PLGA and PCL …”

“…Each method offers a distinct means of activating the release of dexamethasone from the capsules. [161] In another work, [170] the authors used layered polymers stained with dye to facilitate laser cutting over microsized squares. Due to the following heating step, the polymer layers melt forming semi-spherical articles.…”
