Laser ablation ICP-MS for quantitative biomedical applications

Abstract: LA-ICP-MS allows precise, relatively fast, and spatially resolved measurements of elements and isotope ratios at trace and ultratrace concentration levels with minimal sample preparation. Over the past few years this technique has undergone rapid development, and it has been increasingly applied in many different fields, including biological and medical research. The analysis of essential, toxic, and therapeutic metals, metalloids, and nonmetals in biomedical tissues is a key task in the life sciences today, a… Show more

“…In addition, quantitative images can be obtained when using the appropriate standardization approaches. 24,25,26 To date, several reports have described the imaging of nanomaterials in cells, 27,28,29 tissues 30,31,32 and plants. 33 A few of these studies have involved AuNPs, yet all but one 33 have measured AuNPs with core sizes between 13 and 50 nm.…”

“…Most investigators use matrix-matched in-house standards such as spiked tissue homogenates or agarose gels. Various normalization approaches and quantification strategies are described in the reviews of Konz et al 16 and Hare et al 18 In this study, we investigated the detection of nanoparticle accumulation in histological sections of atherosclerotic plaques via detection of europium with LA-ICP-MS. Moreover, based on calibration series of the Eu-VSOP suspension dropped onto liver tissue sections, we quantified and compared Eu-VSOP with endogenous iron content in aortic roots sections.…”

“…Thus, the methods must be feasible for working with greater and smaller amounts of a sample and must also be in agreement with green chemistry recommendations. Other options with inherent advantages for the determination of halogens in biological samples are direct sampling [136], electrothermal vaporization [204,205], and laser ablation coupled with ICP-MS [103,206,207]. Additionally, although few applications were found for determination of halogens, laser-induced-breakdown spectrometry can be considered a potential detection technique mainly regarding determination of halogens in pharmaceutical products [208] because it allows analysis almost free of a sample preparation step [209,210].…”
