Laryngeal Glycogenic Acanthosis Presenting as Leukoplakia

Abstract: We report a case of an incidental finding of glycogenic acanthosis of the larynx on autopsy in a 79-year-old man who died of myocardial infarction. The lesion was grossly recognized as a white plaque (leukoplakia) on the subglottic compartment of the left side of the larynx. Histological sections revealed thickened squamous mucosa positive for abundant glycogen on periodic acid-Schiff staining. No epithelial dysplasia was noted. The patient had a history of smoking. Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD.
