Large Noncoding RNAs in Bacteria

Abstract: Bacterial noncoding RNA (ncRNA) classes longer than 200 nucleotides are rare, but are responsible for performing some of the most fundamental tasks in living cells. RNAs such as 16S and 23S ribosomal RNA, group I and group II introns, RNase P ribozymes, tmRNAs, and coenzyme B12 riboswitches, are diverse in structure and accomplish biochemical functions that rival the activities of proteins. Over the last decade, a number of new classes of large ncRNAs have been uncovered in bacteria. A total of 21 classes with… Show more

“…5). The length of this transcript (ϳ800 bp based on the RNA-seq coverage), is comparable to that of the giant-, ornate-, lake-, and Lactobacillales-derived (GOLLD) and the rumenoriginating, ornate, large (ROOL) RNAs that have been found in many phage genomes (51). These RNAs are frequently harbored near tRNAs, although this is not the case for ICP1, since it does not possess any tRNAs.…”

“…The role of these large ncRNAs is unknown. In one Lactobacillus brevis prophage, a GOLLD RNA was found to accumulate during lytic infection but was dispensable for phage production (51).…”

“…The most abundantly expressed ICP1 transcript is encoded in an approximately 1kb orf-less space between gp139, the start of ICP1's lysis cluster [25], and gp140 (Fig 4). The length of this transcript (~800bp based on the RNA-seq coverage), is comparable to the Giant-Ornate-Lake-and Lactobacialles-Derived (GOLLD) and the Rumen-Originating, Ornate, Large (ROOL) RNAs that have been found in many phage genomes [47]. These RNAs are frequently encoded near tRNAs, although this is not the case for ICP1 since it does not possess any tRNAs.…”

“…ncRNAs consist of RNA species with a variety of functions, including gene regulation (e.g., small RNA (sRNA), microRNA (miRNA), long non-coding RNA (lncRNA)), enzyme-like activities (ribozymes, e.g., ribosomal RNA (rRNA)), and transfer of amino acids to the ribosome (transfer RNA). Their size ranges from miRNAs (21–25 bp) to long rRNA strands (thousands of bp), and they act both intra- and extracellularly [42,43,44]. The mapping of these RNAs generates valuable spatio-temporal information regarding RNA dynamics and function, and the physiological state of a cell [45].…”
