Large Kerr rotation in ordered CrPt3 films

Abstract: CrPt 3 films have been prepared by depositing Cr/Pt multilayers using a magnetron sputterer followed by heat treatment. Small and wide angle x-ray diffraction diagrams, magnetic hysteresis loops, and Kerr rotation angle spectra of the films have been investigated. The films had AuCu3 type ordered alloy structure and strong and weak preferred orientation of {111} and {100} planes parallel to the film surface. It was found that CrPt3 films showed the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy to the film surface, large c… Show more

“…First MO Kerr effect measurements on CrPt 3 have been performed on bulk samples by Verg . ohl and Schoenes [2] showing À0.4 rotation near 1 eV and 0.2 near 3 eV. Similar values have been found later for sputtered polycrystalline films [3] and epitaxial films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) [4].…”

“…Experimental methods L1 2 phase CrPt 3 films were obtained by postannealing of Cr/Pt multilayers [12,14]. The [Cr (0.4 nm)/Pt (1.5-1.7 nm)] 10 multilayers were prepared by alternating sputtering of Cr and Pt on thermally oxidized (500 nm SiO 2 ) silicon substrates.…”

“…CrPt 3 and MnPt 3 ordered alloys exhibit large magneto-optical Kerr rotations of À0.7 and À1.2 , respectively, at a photon energy around 1.2 eV [1,2]. The CrPt 3 and MnPt 3 films show the spectral shape of the Kerr rotation similar to each other, while they showed quite different magnetic anisotropy.…”

“…The CrPt 3 and MnPt 3 films show the spectral shape of the Kerr rotation similar to each other, while they showed quite different magnetic anisotropy. The CrPt 3 film exhibits a large perpendicular anisotropy [2,3], while the MnPt 3 film has the easy axis parallel to the film plane [1]. CrPt 3 and MnPt 3 ordered alloys are known to have the same crystal structure of Cu 3 Au type.…”
