This paper analyzes the non-linear geometric behavior of reinforced concrete slender columns. This approach is due to the fact that there is a tendency to reinforced concrete slender constructions, which may have significant second order effects. This research aimed at comparing different formulations for the analysis of non-linear behavior of reinforced concrete slender columns by comparing results from simulated problem (slender column with ten load scenarios) between the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Iterative Process P-DELTA(P-∆). Numeric results revealed that the Iterative Process P-∆ presented different results from FEM and that the second order effects are significant for reinforced concrete slender column problems.

SUMMARYA finite beam-column element computer program for the structural failure analysis of proportionally loaded skeletal plane frames is described. The program, which is based on an iterative stiffness approach, provides for non-linear elastic or plastic-non-linear elastic behaviour. Particular attention is given to the incorporation into the analysis of geometrical imperfections, return of elasticity at plastic hinges and negative frame stiffness. The effect of lack-of-fit displacements on the load-deflection path and failure load of frames that carry relatively large axial loads is described in general terms. The theory is developed further through the application of the computer program to two examples which show the necessity for allowing for the effect of imperfections when designing axially loaded redundant frames.

In this paper the results of both the theoretical and experimental stress analyses of composite materials reinforced with ribbons are presented. The reinforcing materials for such composites are characterized as two‐dimensional elements which are isotropic in planes parallel to the faces. The theoretical work is based on the finite element method. Experimentally, the photoelastic technique is employed to determine the stresses around the glass ribbons embedded in an epoxy matrix. The specimens, containing a number of aligned ribbons, were loaded in tension parallel to the ribbon width. The variation of shearing stress at the ribbon‐matrix interface as well as the pertubation effect on both the ribbon normal stress and interfacial shear due to the discontinuity of the neighboring ribbons are discussed.
