Lanternfish (Myctophidae) from eastern Brazil, southwest Atlantic Ocean

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Twenty-nine species from 11 genera of Myctophidae were taken in daytime midwater and bottom trawl hauls off eastern Brazil (11 o -22 o S). Trawls were performed aboard the French R/V Thalassa to depths from 19 to 2271 m, including samples from shelf, slope and in the vicinity of oceanic banks and seamounts. Diaphus garmani was the most abundant species, accounting for 84% of all identified individuals and with four other species (D. dumerilii, D. brachycephalus, D. perspicillatus and Myctophum obtusi… Show more

“…Major scientific surveys performed in the last decades along the Brazilian coast focused mostly on the demersal fish diversity ( e.g ., Bernardes et al ., 2005; Costa et al ., 2007; Costa & Mincarone, 2010; Klautau et al ., 2020; Lins Oliveira et al ., 2015), while relatively less attention has been given to the meso‐ and bathypelagic fishes ( e.g ., Braga et al ., 2014; Figueiredo et al ., 2002; Lima et al ., 2011; Mincarone et al ., 2014). In recent years, the team members of the Project ABRACOS (Acoustics along the BRAzilian COaSt) conducted a multidisciplinary study off north‐eastern Brazil to better understand the degree of connectivity between the continental margin and the oceanic islands and seamounts of the region.…”
