Purpose: The study aims to identify the various diasporic identities, hybrid identities, and identity crisis analyses of a Pakistani film, ‘Khuda Kay Liye’ released on July 20, 2007, written, directed, and produced by Shoaib Mansoor. Method: The present study is qualitative by nature and interpretive by approach. The researchers collected the primary data from the film watching it profoundly. The secondary data was collected from the various relevant articles published in periodicals/journals to build the theoretical argument—analyzing the data utilizing the thematic analysis technique. Main Findings: This qualitative analysis enlightens more significant issues about diaspora and identities in the focused film. Individuals in the film represent themselves distinctive living in another society, culture, or religion, practicing their native (Pakistani) cultural norms and ideologically. Moreover, as a subordinate ethnic group, specifically Muslim characters in the film, face discrimination and oppression. Through qualitative discussions based on excerpts dealing with socio-cultural behavior, the researchers concluded that diasporic identities constitute the core thematic content of the film. Application of the Study: The study would be significant for understanding diasporic and hybrid identities. The academic researcher may adopt the theoretical framework of the present research to employ it on the other genres of Pakistani literature to find the diasporic identities and identity crises. The teachers of Pakistani literature would also seek help to understand and teach the concepts analyzed in the research. The Study’s Originality: The study is contemporary as it employs conceptual, theoretical frameworks to explore the diasporic features in a film.

During intercultural communication, it is crucial to interpret correctly and to use appropriately foreign idioms which are culturally marked and reflect linguistic and cultural identity of a speech community. Interlocutors should be aware of the cultural and historical precedents that gave rise to the primary image underlying idiomatic expressions and thus created their unique phraseological worldview. The aim of the research is to find out what is a better predictor of correct idiom interpretation - degree of proficiency in a foreign language or degree of genealogical kinship between the native and foreign languages. The topicality of the research is justified by the need for a deeper understanding of linguistic and cultural identity of native and foreign-language speakers, with a view to facilitate and enhance cross-cultural communication. The working hypothesis is that due to the close genealogical kinship between Russian and Bulgarian and the users advanced level of English, the number of correctly interpreted idioms may vary within a statistically significant medium range. The total sample comprises 5000 idioms (2500 English and 2500 Bulgarian ones). The subsample used in the experiment comprises 60 idioms (30 English and 30 Bulgarian ones) selected from The Oxford Dictionary of Idioms and Nov fraseologichen rechnik na bylgarskiya jezik (Нов фразеологичен речник на българския език) by means of stratified systematic sampling. The main methods used in the research include (1) comparative linguistic and cultural analyses, (2) scientific experimentation, (3) systematic and stratified sampling, and (4) a paired t-test. The experimental research and the paired t-test have proved our hypothesis and demonstrated that Russian participants correctly decode more Bulgarian than English idioms, with intergroup variation being statistically significant. Research findings have implications for cultural linguistics. Since translation loans (calques), isomorphic idioms, and idioms dating back to a common source are interpreted more quickly and more accurately than idioms which contain unique or culturally-loaded elements, such as old-fashioned words or proper names, access to cultural precedents that served as prototypes of set expressions contributes to a more seamless code-switching and enables communicants to penetrate deeper the mentality of a specific linguacultural community and thus become aware of the variability of cultural cognition and conceptualisation.

Epistemic modality which deals with possibility (validity) and predictability is quite a complicated grammar topic for second language learners in comparison with deontic modality which indicates obligation, permission and desirability. While deontic modality refers to more evident attitudes, epistemic modality deals with subtle nuances of reality. The problem is aggravated by the fact that core English modal verbs (must, can, may, might, should, etc.) are duel and can express both types of modal meaning. Besides, a set of language means which express epistemic modality is rather extensive, and includes various adverbs and adjectives, e. g. possible, possibly, probably, perhaps, likely, unlikely, presumably, etc. The article aims to highlight difficulties in the acquisition of epistemic modality and suggest some teaching techniques to master it. The material for the linguistic analysis was obtained from British and American quality newspapers (The Guardian, Independent, The Times, The Economist, The New York Times, and The Washington Post) for the period 2018-2020. The paper argues that epistemic modality should be in the ESL teacher's focus not only at the grammar lessons but during the whole teaching process. Classes of translation might give a good opportunity to develop the relevant skills to discern epistemic modality and define its function in the text. In this paper I analyse newspaper texts and show that media writers often resort to epistemic modality as a means of creating ambiguity and uncertainty to articulate their ideas in an indirect and subtle way and thus to influence the public opinion. I argue that to understand the function of epistemic modals in the text and discover the author's message a thorough analysis of the text and context is needed. The combination of traditional teaching techniques with discourse-pragmatic analysis complemented by constructivist approach constitutes a relevant method of SL teaching and learning. It contributes to developing translation skills and educating independent thinkers.
