Land-Use Impact on Water Quality of the Opak Sub-Watershed, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Abstract: The integrated monitoring system of water quality is eminently reliant on water quality trend data. This study aims to obtain water quality patterns related to land-use change over a periodic observation in the Opak sub-watershed, Indonesia, both from a seasonal and spatial point of view. Landsat image data from 2013 to 2020 and water quality data comprising 25 parameters were compiled and analyzed. This study observed that land use remarkably correlated to water quality, especially the building area represent… Show more

“…Facts found in the field show that an increase in housing, service, commercial and infrastructure development activities contributes positively to an increase in water quality pollution and land cover changes. That is, an increase in the number of urban residents towards the development of new urban areas has an effect on spatial pressure and affects the use of watersheds and changes in land cover in coastal areas towards water quality pollution (Syafri et al, 2020;Yokosawa and Mizunoya, 2022;Brontowiyono et al, 2022). Furthermore, development activities that tend to increase in addition to causing a high pollution load also have an impact on the destruction of mangrove forest habitat due to coastal reclamation.…”

“…Rainfall also has an impact on the DO levels in water. According to previous research byBrontowiyono et al (2022), the presence of wastewater entering the river may increase the aeration process by the increasing river flow rate. Increased aeration increased the DO levels.…”
