Lactobacillus reuteri in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection

Abstract: Probiotics have proven to be useful in the treatment of a number of gastrointestinal diseases. Probiotics may compete directly with Helicobacter pylori, possibly by interference with adherence or by the production of antimicrobial molecules. Lactobacillus reuteri has been shown to inhibit H. pylori in vitro and in vivo, and theoretically may play a role in eradication therapy. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of L. reuteri in H. pylori eradication therapy. This was an open label single center … Show more

“…This also was reflected in two other trials from Iran and Brazil where multistrain probiotics as adjunct therapy failed to show a benefit for eradication . Another study examined the role of L. reuteri without antibiotic therapy, finding a cure rate of 13.6% (3/22) when it was used with PPI . Bifidobacterium infantis has also been proposed as having anti‐ H .…”

“…Lactobacillus reuteri ( L. reuteri ) was found to have a positive effect on both H. pylori eradication and therapy‐related side effects . In a prospective, double‐blind, randomized, placebo‐controlled study, L. reuteri increased the eradication rate by 9.1% (from 65.9% to 75%) .…”

“…Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) was found to have a positive effect on both H. pylori eradication and therapy-related side effects. 51,52 In a prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, L. reuteri increased the eradication rate by 9.1% (from 65.9% to 75%). 52 In levofloxacin-based second-line therapy, L. reuteri increased eradication rates (80% vs 62%, P < 0.05) and reduced the incidences of common therapy-related side effects in a single-center, prospective, randomized controlled study.…”
