Lactation protects against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats

Abstract: Some researchers have reported that lactation is effective in reducing cardiovascular disease risk factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether lactation may improve intrinsic tolerance against ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury. The rats were randomly divided into two groups (n = 8 in each group). In the lactation (Lact) group, the surgery was performed on postpartum day 21 (at the end of lactation period) and the results were compared with those of virgin female rats (control group). Cardiac I… Show more

“…We have demonstrated some preconditioning interventions in previous experiments, reducing infarct size and arrhythmias. 12 , 13 The cardioprotective effect of exercise preconditioning was reported as a reduction in infarct size in previous studies. 14 , 15 Accumulating evidence indicates that both short-term (i.e.…”

“…22,23 The only study indicating cardioprotective effects of lactation against IR injury was recently performed by Shekarforoush and Safari. 17 However, their study did not take into account if the cardioprotection was conferred by the pregnancy alone. In addition, these authors were unable to observe antiarrhythmic effects of lactation during myocardial ischemia.…”

“…In addition, these authors were unable to observe antiarrhythmic effects of lactation during myocardial ischemia. 17 In the current study, in vitro Langendorff model was used. Thus, the early-onset cardioprotective effects of lactation can be attributed to the intrinsic characteristics of the heart independent of the complex physiology of lactation.…”

“…Although myocardial ischemia and RI are both potent arrhythmogenic stimuli, the mechanisms involved in RA are unclear [11,12]. Oxygen-derived free radicals [13] and cytosolic calcium overload [14] are the 2 main factors of RA, and disturbance of potassium homeostasis is undoubtedly responsible for arrhythmogenesis [15]. In addition, autophagy is an adaptive physiological countermeasure to RA associated with cellular senescence and ischemia/reperfusion [16].…”
