“…Later in development, it becomes restricted to lymphatic endothelium in most tissue (24,25). It has also been found to be upregulated in the endothelial cells of tumor neovascularization (26) and is consistently expressed in lymphangiomas (25), Kaposi's sarcoma (24), and in hemangiomas and angiosarcomas (27). Our experience on angiosarcomas show VEGFR3 expression in over one-half of the cases (9 of 17), suggesting a derivation from an immature endothelial-type cell.…”

“…Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma has also been shown to be positive for VEGFR-3, a predominantly lymphatic marker; 10 however, VEGFR-3 immunoreactivity is not exclusive for tumors of lymphatics. 9 It has also been stated that the predominant neoplastic component of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (spindled cells) recapitulates the phenotype of blood vascular endothelium (CD31 and CD34 positive), whereas the SMA-positive glomeruloid islands located within the vascular nodules represent zones of platelet trapping and blood destruction. 5 Our D2-40 data suggest that the neoplastic component has a lymphothelial immunophenotype, and the observed differences in the staining of the periphery and the center of vascular D2-40 in kaposiform hemangioendothelioma LV Debelenko et al lobules further highlight the architectural, and probably functional distinction between these two compartments.…”

“…28 Furthermore, both blood vessel and lymphatic vascular tumors immunoreact with the VEGFR-3 antibody. 9 Another predominantly lymphothelial marker, LYVE-1 has been shown to stain endothelium of …”

“…VEGFR-3, a glycosylated tyrosine kinase cell surface receptor, has been used to stain lymph vessels but is also widely expressed in intratumoral blood vessels resulting in loss of specificity for lymphatics in tumors. 21,22 LYVE-1, a specific receptor for hyaluronan, is expressed in endothelium of lymphatics. 23 However, it is also expressed in some blood vessels of the lung and in hepatic sinusoids.…”
