Laboratory Study on the Spontaneous Combustion Propensity of Lignite Undergone Heating Treatment at Low Temperature in Inert and Low-Oxygen Environments

Abstract: This laboratory study investigated the spontaneous combustion propensity of coal undergone heating treatment at low temperature (<200 °C) in N 2 , CO 2 , and the air of 10% O 2 environments. The investigations include the changes in the emission of carbon oxides, oxygen consumption, activation energy, infrared spectroscopy, and pore structure before and after the treatment of lignite. The results show that in comparison to the original coal, the treated lignite is more easily oxidized, produces more carbon oxi… Show more

“…Whether an underground coal fire will occur depends on the spontaneous combustion susceptibility of the coal and the conditions surrounding the mines. The susceptibility to coal spontaneous combustion is affected by coal rank and coal components, mining depth, coal seam thickness, humidity, temperature and air circulation [124][125][126][127][128][129][130].…”

“…The band characteristics of aliphatic C-H stretching with the ratio of aliphatic oxygen-containing compounds decreases with increasing rank (W. Li & Zhu, 2014). Previous researchers have generally accepted that the formation of intermediate peroxide and hydroxides are due to the decomposition of oxygenated hydroxyl groups under low temperature oxidation Tang & Xue, 2015;D. Wang et al, 2010).…”
