“…This pattern is defined as a pathological change characterized by qi deficiency with impaired transporting and transforming function of the spleen [9]. Gastrointestinal problems could lead to altered eating habits that might reduce the total energy intake [30, 31]. RMR is known to decrease in response to restriction of energy intake to values below predictions based on body composition changes, possibly due to an adaptation which can limit weight loss and compromise the maintenance of a reduced body weight [32].…”

“…However, both parameters vary substantially between patients 179,180 ; the contribution of overweight to functional dyspepsia symptoms warrants consideration 32 . Although no major differences in meal size or frequency, energy intake or macronutrient consumption were observed between patients with functional dyspepsia and healthy controls, some studies have found that patients with functional dyspepsia tend to consume slightly smaller numbers of full meals and greater numbers of smaller meals and snacks 178,[180][181][182] and have slightly lower mean energy and fat intakes 178 (although some patients have much larger intakes than healthy controls 178,183 ).…”

“…In addition to fatty foods, a range of other foods or food groups are frequently associated with functional dyspepsia symptoms by patients [179][180][181][182]186,187 (FIG. 5), but how they could contribute to the pathophysiological mechanisms of functional dyspepsia is under investigation.…”

“…Zanini et al [16] reported that 19% of 348 patients with irritable bowel syndrome had weight loss and that the mean weight loss was 3 kg. In a study investigating laboratory parameters and the nutritional status of 180 patients who were diagnosed with FD based on the Rome II criteria, 30 (16.67%) patients had weight loss between 5 and 10% of their initial body weight, and 8 (4.44%) had weight loss of >10% of their initial body weight [17]. Our multicenter study found that from among 1,057 FD patients, 207 FD patients has lost ≥5% of the initial body weight during the previous 12 months or less with the onset of dyspepsia symptoms.…”
