Physico-chemical quality of drinking water used in traditional medicine practices in Togo: case of localities bordering Togodo-Sud National Park

This study is based on samples and analyzes of drinking water used (ECU) in the practices of traditional medicine by the population of the cantons bordering the National Park of Togodo-Sud. The samples were taken during two periods corresponding to the dry season (April 2021) and the rainy season (August 2021) due to fifteen (15) samples per season for a total of thirty (30) samples. Nineteen physicochemical parameters were evaluated on these samples in order to characterize the quality of the ECUs. The results show that the ECUs emanate from 05 sources due to 27.5% of collected rainwater, 26% of well water, 19.5% of borehole water and 14% of river and river water. 95% of water sources are not protected. Physico-chemical analyzes show that the samples have levels that do not comply with WHO guidelines and limit their use in traditional medicine. Faced with these results, microbiological and bacteriological analyzes are important in order to raise public awareness and facilitate political responses.

Cette étude est basée sur des prélèvements et analyses des eaux de consommation utilisées (ECU) dans les pratiques de la médecine traditionnelle par la population des cantons riverains au Parc National de Togodo-Sud. Les prélèvements ont été effectués pendant deux périodes correspondant aux saison sèche (Avril 2021) et saison pluvieuse (Août 2021) en raison de quinze (15) échantillons par saison pour un total de trente (30) échantillons. Dix-neuf paramètres physico-chimiques ont été évalués sur ces échantillons en vue de caractériser la qualité des ECU. Les résultats montrent que les ECU émanent de 05 sources en raison de 27,5% des eaux de pluie collectées, 26% des eaux de puits, 19,5% des eaux de forage et 14% des eaux de fleuve et rivière. 95% des sources d'eaux ne sont pas protégées. Les analyses physico-chimiques montrent que les échantillons présentent des teneurs nonconforme aux directives de l'OMS et limites leurs utilisations en médecine traditionnelle. Face à ces résultats, les analyses microbiologiques et bactériologiques sont importantes en vue de sensibiliser la population et faciliter les réponses politiques.

Lack of access to safe drinking water is an issue in some areas where centralized water treatment is not possible, the biosand filter (BSF) one of several such point-of-use technologies is available. This study was conducted in Côte d’Ivoire to evaluate the effect of flow rate on the performance of the BSF. Three biosand filter (BSF) built in Poly vinyl chloride was used to investigate the effect of three flow rates (1.95 L/d in BSF1; 3.9 L/d in BSF2 and 7.8 L/d in BSF3) for 91 days. Each BSF was filled with 15 cm of gravel, 90 cm of sand and 40 cm of supernatant water. Physical and chemical parameters were analyzed in raw water and filtered water with standards methods. The results showed that the percentage removal of TSS approximately the same for all filters. Ammonium concentrations ranged from 37 to 170 μg.L-1, 110 to 190 μg.L-1 and 150 to 278 μg.L-1 for filtered waters of BSF1, BSF2 and BSF3, respectively. Nitrite concentrations in filtered waters of BSF1 (2 - 33 μg.L-1) were less than those of BSF2 (5 - 45 μg.L-1) and BSF3 (7 - 49.5 μg.L-1). Nitrate concentrations in filtered waters of BSF2 (1.9 to 4 mg.L-1) and BSF3 (1.6 to 4.2 mg.L-1) were higher than those of BSF1 (0.6 to 2.3 mg.L-1). Chemical Oxygen Demand removal efficiency for BSF3 (68.2 ± 9.5%) was lower compared to BSF2 (82.6 ± 3.8%) and BSF1 (93.7 ± 2.8%). The flow rate has an influence only on the removal of ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and Chemical Oxygen Demand. The best treatment results were obtained with the minimum flow rate (1.95 L/d).
