Knowledge Based Industrial Maintenance Using Portable Devices and Augmented Reality

Abstract: In this paper we present a framework and a system implementation for the exploitation of embedded knowledge in the domain of industrial maintenance in a mobile context, using Augmented Reality techniques. We base our approach in the SOUPA group of ontologies (Standard Ontology for Ubiquitous and Pervasive Applications). Our approach extends SOUPA with two new ontologies (i) the Set of Experience Knowledge Structure, used to model the user's experience and (ii) the AR ontology which models an Augmented Reality … Show more

“…Nonetheless, the involved costs in OJT can be significantly high. Augmented reality supported training has been employed as a more-cost efficient alternative, although it is typically more applicable to specialized training, such as maintenance training, (Besbes et al 2012;Haritos and Macchiarella 2005;Jee et al 2011;Nakajima and Itho 2003;Platonov et al 2006;Savioja et al 2007;Schwald and Laval 2003;Toro et al 2007;Yamabe and Nakajima 2012) and involves relatively high costs if it were to be made more broadly applicable.…”

“…In this section we will review briefly the presented system in [17] showing in fact that such development although older than this work, follows the same directives and recommendations while at the same time proves that the conceptualization proposed here is applicable even to legacy architectures.…”

“…In a previous work [17] we presented a system that considering some detected challenges in the Industrial Maintenance field, proposes an architecture and its correspondent implementation for the enhancement of the Industrial Maintenance management using Knowledge Based techniques.…”

“…The SOE has been successfully applied in industrial environments, specifically for maintenance purposes, in conjunction with augmented reality (AR) techniques (Toro, Sanin, Vaquero, Posada, and Szczerbicki 2007), and in the fields of finances and energy research (Sanin, Mancilla-Amaya, Szczerbicki, and CayfordHowell 2009). …”
