Knowledge and practices regarding safe household cleaning and disinfection for COVID-19 prevention — United States, May 2020

Abstract: With the significant increase in the use of household cleaners, disinfectants, and hand sanitizers among the general population in an effort to prevent SARS‐CoV‐2 transmission, and the notable knowledge gaps about their safe preparation, use, and storage, this report underscores the importance of educating transplant candidates and recipients on the proper use of such cleaning and disinfecting products.

“…The rate of indoor disinfection behavior reached 83%. Consistent with previous reports [12,13] , the key reasons for the zero SARS-CoV-2 infective rate of LTx recipients in our study may be due to the good performance of hand hygiene, wearing masks and indoor disinfection, and even isolation from family members. According to the guideline published by the World Health Organization (WHO), using masks can reduce potential exposure risk from an infected patient during the pre-symptomatic or an asymptomatic phase [14] .…”

“…People who used official government sites to get news and clarifications often adhered to national health guidelines adopting preventative measures such as social distancing, use of face mask and proper hand hygiene. On the other hand, people who preferred information from social networks in addition to presenting obvious knowledge gaps were more prone to dangerous behaviors [35,37]. Approximately a quarter of USA general public (23.9%) interviewed by Geldsetzer [36] believed that the SARS-CoV-2 is a bioweapon developed by a government or a terrorist organization; the author points out that falsehoods circulating on social media are the main cause of misinformation.…”

“…Disinfectants are generally applied as a spray or wipe, which is labour intensive even on readily accessible surfaces and difficult, if not impossible, to apply on hard-to-reach surfaces. Employees who undertake liquid disinfectant application often are exposed to the hazardous chemicals in them [ 15 , 16 ]. Decontamination by fumigation using a gas, vapour, or fine mist is effective on all surfaces including those in the hard-to-reach areas; in addition, fumigation decontaminates the air in the room [ 17 ].…”
