Knee Rheumatoid Arthritis With Lateral Tibial Plateau and Tibial Stress Fractures Managed With One-Stage Knee Joint Replacement

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic disease that causes progressive joint damage, bony defects, and ligament imbalance. These sequelae of RA present major difficulties to surgeons during hip or knee arthroplasty. The presence of coexistent periarticular fractures adds to these difficulties and represents a surgical dilemma. No guidance exists within the literature for the medical and surgical management of complicated cases of RA with coexistent fractures. So far, the evidence has focused on fixati… Show more

“… 20 Some studies have explored the use of long tibial stems being supplemented by plate fixation of the fracture. 21 , 22 Stress fractures of the proximal tibia can occur in patients with knee OA, in which the treatment and functional outcome will be complicated. TKA with tibial stem provides a suitable solution for such conditions.…”

“…Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which causes joint swelling, degeneration of cartilage affecting juxtaarticular bone has been linked to reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mass. This disease causes progressive joint degeneration as a result of its persistent nature, resulting in considerable locomotor handicap and a decline in quality of life [3] .…”
