“…It was judged that this was not attributable to the study medication but to a kinking of his carotid artery. This case was reported in another publication (17). In total, 13% of the 152 patients were removed from the study for medical reasons and 18% for nonmedical reasons.…”

“…Extremely tortuous DICAs can divert their route into the pharyngeal wall and narrow pyriform sinus, which results in the DICAs presenting with a pharyngeal bulge and pulsation 9 , 72 . Therefore, awareness of DICAs is very important during pharyngeal surgical procedures because inadvertent injury or ligation of a tortuous cervical ICA during procedures for the treatment of peritonsillar abscesses, adenoid surgery or tonsillectomy can result in serious complications, including massive hemorrhage 6 , 73 - 75 . In addition to pharyngeal bulge and pulsation, DICAs can co-occur with pharyngeal foreign body sensation and odynophagia 76 .…”

“…In this case, operative intervention is rarely required, and conservative treatment can be administered. However, other DICAs can be disabling or even fatal and thus require surgical treatment to prevent occlusion of the ICA 4 - 6 . Many doubts remain regarding the etiology and best course of management for DICAs because it is difficult to correlate DICAs with the onset of clinical symptoms 7 , 8 .…”

“…In the anecdotal reports on the haemodynamic significance of congenital kinking of the ICA in children, hemiparesis, loss of vision, aphasia and seizures have been described. (30) There are some uncertainties about the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia caused by the kink. In the case of a kink without a plaque, positional occlusion of the vessel is blamed.…”
