Kinetics of Intermetallic Phases and Mechanical Behavior of ZnSn3% Hot‐Dip Galvanization Coatings

Abstract: Hot-dip galvanizing process is one of most used techniques to generate coatings for metallic material protection in aggressive environments. In last decades, such a process has been developed in order to obtain coatings with chemical and mechanical properties for specific utilizations. In this work, the influence of high contents of Sn (3% by weight) on the performance of the traditional Zn coatings is experimentally analysed in terms of both microstructure kinetics formation and mechanical properties. Further… Show more

“…According to the experimental results reported in refs. [17,23,45,46], the better galvanizing condition has been obtained for a dipping time equal to 60 s due to the fact that the damage, measured as the radial crack density (cracks no./length), is lower with respect to that corresponding to the other dipping times examined, that is, the intermetallic phases present a more ductile behavior.…”

“…For each of the aforementioned baths, five different dipping time values were considered. The numerical results, obtained by the numerical hybrid models developed, and related to the global bending behavior of coated plates, are compared with both experimental data [ 17,23,45,46 ] and other previous numerical results obtained by some of the present authors. [ 24 ] Moreover, the numerical crack patterns are compared with the experimental observations of the longitudinal section of the plates at the end of testing, by means of a light optical microscope.…”

“…The process used to generate Zn coatings can be modified by changing the chemical bath composition. 3 The addition of different metallic elements in the pure Zn bath leads to the formation of different intermetallic phases. As shown in Figure 1, coatings obtained by a pure Zn bath is characterized by four intermetallic phases:…”

“…The failure of zinc layer appearing during deformation mainly includes powdering, flaking, cracking, and galling. Mechanisms of failure can be included as basal plane cleavage of pure zinc coatings, brittle fracture of intermetallic phases, intergranular separation, ductile rupture, and twinning …”
