Kinetic Study of an Effective Pb(II) Transport through a Bulk Liquid Membrane Containing Calix[6]arene Hexaester Derivative as a Carrier

Abstract: The article describes transport of Pb(II) through bulk liquid membrane (BLM) containing calix[6]arene hexaester derivative (1) as a carrier. The effect of various parameters such as temperature, carrier concentration, stirring speed and type of solvent on the Pb(II) transport efficiency of the carrier through BLM was evaluated. The activation energy values for the extraction and re-extraction were found as 56.33 kJ mol À1 and 14.79 kJ mol À1 , respectively. These values demonstrate that the process is diffusio… Show more

“…Therefore, it is clear from the results that both kinetic constants k 1 and k 2 and flux values are dependent on the carrier concentration and increase gradually with increase in carrier concentration until 1 Â 10 À4 M and after that these values become somewhat constant. This observation is in accordance with the previously reported studies (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)22).…”

“…In this regard, calixarenes are a well documented class of supramolecular carriers providing promising solutions in BLMs (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)22). A remarkable property of calixarenes is their derivatization to bring various binding subunits together in a single molecule in order to create cooperativity among them in complexation phenomenon (38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44).…”

“…Thus, the vulnerability invoked by both arsenate and chromate emphasize the importance of those processes which not only remove these species from aqueous environment but also reduce or eliminate their bioavailability. In pursuance for the purification of aqueous media a number of techniques were explored including electro coagulation, nanofiltration (18) reverse osmosis (19), Downloaded by [University of Montana] at 11:04 06 April 2015 activated mud (20), ferrihydrite crystallization process (21), solvent extraction, ion exchange, electro-deposition, precipitation/coagulation technique and sorption (22)(23)(24). Among these methods, due to low cost, flexibility, and simplicity of design, convenient to operate and avoid the formation of toxic secondary pollutants.…”

“…The WHO permissible limit for Pb 2+ in drinking water is 0.01 mg/L [8]. However, the excessive Pb 2+ exposure may cause brain damage and dysfunction of kidneys, liver, and central nervous system in humans, headache, convulsions, behavioral disorders, and constipation and potentially can cause cancer from a lifetime exposure above the action level [9,10] 51 (2013) 4666-4674 June adopted for the removal of toxic metal ions including chemical precipitation, coagulation/flocculation, ion exchange, solvent extraction, cementation, complexation, electrochemical operations, biological operations, evaporation, filtration, adsorption and membrane processes [11][12][13][14][15]. Among all these methods, adsorption has got significant advantages such as cost effectiveness, simple operation and environmental friendly approach [16,17].…”
