Critical voices within and beyond the scientific community have pointed to a grave matter of concern regarding who is included in research and who is not. Subsequent investigations have revealed an extensive form of sampling bias across a broad range of disciplines that conduct human subjects research called “WEIRD”: Western, Educated, Industrial, Rich, and Democratic. Recent work has indicated that this pattern exists within human–computer interaction (HCI) research, as well. How then does human–robot interaction (HRI) fare? And could there be other patterns of sampling bias at play, perhaps those especially relevant to this field of study? We conducted a systematic review of the premier ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (2006–2022) to discover whether and how WEIRD HRI research is. Importantly, we expanded our purview to other factors of representation highlighted by critical work on inclusion and intersectionality as potentially underreported, overlooked, and even marginalized factors of human diversity. Findings from 827 studies across 749 papers confirm that participants in HRI research also tend to be drawn from WEIRD populations. Moreover, we find evidence of limited, obscured, and possible misrepresentation in participant sampling and reporting along key axes of diversity: sex and gender, race and ethnicity, age, sexuality and family configuration, disability, body type, ideology, and domain expertise. We discuss methodological and ethical implications for recruitment, analysis, and reporting, as well as the significance for HRI as a base of knowledge.

<span>This paper presents a study on parent’s acceptance on wearable technology for children’s safety. Recently, there are many applications of wearable technology used in ensuring children’s safety, such as GPS tracking devices that are seen to be related to the safety of the children. However, the Malaysian parents have not been using these technologies to protect their children due to lack of knowledge on the wearable technology, non-familiarity with the devices, privacy and also security concern of data in wearable technology. Thus, the objective of the present research is to identify the significant factors that influence parents’ acceptance on wearable technology for their children’s safety and to identify the greatest influence factors for the acceptance of these wearable technologies for children’s safety. These factors are expected to bring about usefulness, ease of use, trust, privacy risk, financial risk and intention to use these technologies. As such, quantitative survey method was employed in the present study to obtain the result for the factors acceptance. The analysis and findings were done using IBM SPSS Version 25 tools via Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Linear Regressions to get the result for the acceptance and to achieve the research objectives. Based on the result, it is discovered that the factors significant to intention to use of the wearable technology are perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and trust while privacy and financial risk are factors seen to be non-significant to intention to use the wearable technology. Lastly, trust is discovered to be the greatest factor influencing parents to accept wearable technology and intention to use the technology. However, it is recommended for further study to employ experimental method in carrying out the research in order to get the real trust feeling of intention to use the wearable technology.</span>

Introduction: Researchers and technologists have been exploring ways to utilize robotic technology to aid elderly care and to increase their emotional wellbeing. Previous studies indicated that spirituality is a core factor for successful aging. Various research was done on therapeutic robots for the elderly with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). However, little focus was given to emotions and spiritual elements perceived by different genders. Therefore, this research aims to explore spiritual therapeutic robot design elements based on the elderly’s emotional experience by different genders. Methods: The research firstly conducted expert interview involving 9 experts on elderly care, robotics, and spiritual practice; secondly, KJ Method involving 4 language, spiritual, elderly care, and robotic experts; and thirdly, qualitative and quantitative Kansei assessment (n=12) among the elderly with early AD to determine the conceptual design guide, spiritual emotion words, and finalize the design guide. Results: Two-Sample t-Test shows five of ten spiritual design elements have a p-value of 0.05, which indicates there is a 50-50 chance of a significant difference in spiritual emotional experience between male and female respondents. Further analysis shows differences in results from both genders, but shows similar scores for zikr, surah, and prayer. Conclusion: The results enabled the research to produce a gender-based design guide for therapeutic robots based on spiritual elements and emotions, to successfully evoke positive emotions among the elderly with early AD. The gender-focused design will further extend the effectiveness as it will fit the specific demands of each gender, thus effectively elevating their emotional wellbeing.
