SummaryBei der Kampō-Medizin handelt es sich um eine mehr als1000 Jahre alte Form der japanischen Pflanzenheilkunde,welche sich durch ihre wissenschaftliche Evaluation sowie eine leichte Handhabung und gute Verträglichkeitauszeichnet. Auf pragmatische Art und Weise verbindetsie die Erkenntnisse der wissenschaftlich fundierten Medizin mit traditionellen Konzepten wie der Zungen- undBauchdeckendiagnostik. Für die Auswahl einer Kampō-Rezeptur spielen vor allem in Studien erbrachte Wirksamkeitsbelegen, sowie die Konstitution und das individuelleBeschwerdemuster des Patienten eine wichtige Rolle.Im Rahmen dieses Artikels wird anhand der Nutzungeiniger Kampō-Rezepturen beispielhaft erläutert, wie dietraditionelle japanische Phytotherapie zur Krankheitspräventionausgehend von wissenschaftlich fundiertenWirksamkeitsbelegen in verschiedenen Fachrichtungengenutzt wird. Abgesehen vom mi-byo-Konzept, was eine zentrale Bedeutung für das Verständnis der Präventiondurch Kampō-Rezepturen hat, wird dabei weitgehendauf die Verwendung von traditionellen Begriffen oder Konzepten verzichtet. Die Auswahl der Rezepturen richtetesich nach Qualität und Umfang der vorliegendenwissenschaftlichen Wirksamkeitsbelege bzw. -hinweise,ihrer praktischen Relevanz in Japan und danach, welcheRezepturen möglicherweise eine sinnvolle Ergänzung fürdie therapeutischen Möglichkeiten in unseren Breitendarstellen könnten.

Herbal medicines are currently employed for the treatment of several types of diseases, and also employed for the improvement of Quality of Life (QOL) of patients over the world, in particular, in Asian countries. In Japan, a Japanese herbal medicine namely kampo medicine has been prescribed for the improvement of QOL of patients. Ninjinyoeito (NYT), composed of 12 herbal plants, is one of kampo medicines and used for helping recovery of diseases and improving several symptoms that suffer patients such as anemia, anorexia and fatigue. Recent scientific research approaches to kampo medicines with cells and animal models enable to prove that NYT has multiple functions for improvement of symptoms. Also, clinical studies using NYT support such actions to be widely used for the improvement of symptoms that reduce the QOL of patients.

Cases Patient 1 was an 81‐year‐old patient with general fatigue. Patient 2 was a 56‐year‐old patient who felt cold, with general fatigue and dry cough, after operation for lung cancer; and patient 3 was a 55‐year‐old woman with interstitial pneumonia after breast cancer treatment, who reported feeling cold, with general fatigue and a tendency to catch colds. Outcome Patient 1’s cognition and dry skin were improved by changing hachimigan and hochuekkito to ninjin'yoeito; patients 2 and 3 were effectively treated with ninjin'yoeito. The symptoms of these patients were consistent with frailty. In the five viscera theory, symptoms of lumbago, physical weakness, and cognitive decline are caused by impaired kidney function, while digestive problems involve spleen function. Respiratory symptoms and dry skin are signs of disorder in lung function. Improvement of qi deficiency, which causes a feeling of general fatigue, can address all these symptoms. Conclusion Ninjin'yoeito was useful to treat various symptoms of frailty due to age or severe disease.
