Justification of Maximum (One-Time) Allowable Concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds, Emerging During the High Temperature Treatment of Wood in Chipboard Production, in the Ambient Air

This paper presents the results of the experimental studies on justification of the maximum single allowable concentrations (MAC) of 1-methyl-4-isopropenylcyclohex-1-ene (limonene), 3,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[4.1.0]hept-2-ene (3-carene), and 2,2-dimethyl-3-methylenebicyclo[2.2.1]heptane (camphene) in the air of urban and rural settlements. The research has been carried out in accordance with the current methodology for determining the odor thresholds of substances using modern olfactometric equipment (dynamic olfactometer) and highly sensitive methods for identifying chemical components (chromatography-mass spectrometry). According to the results obtained, the recommended maximum single allowable concentrations in the atmospheric air of urban and rural settlements are 0,08 mg/m3 (hazard class 4) for limonene; 0,2 mg/m3 (hazard class 4) for 3-carene; 0,3 mg/m3 (hazard class 3) for camphene; the limiting indicator of harmfulness for all substances is reflex. An analytical methodic based on chromatography-mass spectrometry and certified in accordance with GOST R 8.563-2009 and GOST R ISO 5725-2002 has been developed to control the concentrations of α-pinene, β-pinene, camphene, 3-carene, and limonene in the atmospheric air of urban and rural settlements.

Introduction. The presence of a specific odour in the ambient air in the areas where various enterprises are located with formal compliance with environmental legislation indicates the need to update the methodology of hygienic standardization of odourous substances. The purpose of the work is to analyze modern methods of the establishment of standards for odourous complex multicomponent mixtures of substances in the atmospheric air and substantiate ways to harmonize them in this field of knowledge. Materials and methods. The paper systematizes existing approaches to regulating the quality of atmospheric air in areas where odourous emissions sources are located, taking into account certain provisions of regulatory and methodological documents, publications on approaches, and criteria for quantitative sanitary and hygienic assessment of the quality of the environment and public health, as well as the authors’ long-term experience in this field. Results. The basic principles of hygienic standardization of the permissible content of odorous mixtures of substances in the atmospheric air taking into account their odour are formulated. The substantiation of hygienic standards is carried out with the allocation of substances identified as priority (indicator), based on the results of studying the production technology and the formation of emissions, olfactory properties of the mixture under experimental conditions, with the possibility of monitoring the established standard in atmospheric air by certified instrumental methods of analysis. Limitations. The limitations of the study are due to the fact that this article does not fully reflect the issues of the development of the entire atmospheric air quality management system taking into account the risk of odour outside the focus of this work, which will be covered in the preparation of the following articles. Conclusion. The ongoing process of harmonization of domestic and foreign approaches used in hygienic standardization including the field of regulation of atmospheric air pollution by specific odours makes it necessary to significantly expand approaches to the issues of rationing and assessment of environmental pollution by complex multicomponent emissions of odour-source enterprises taking into account modern experience.

The purpose of the study is to assess atmospheric air pollution in a city where food and processing enterprises operate using a complex of instrumental, olfacto-odourimetric, calculated, and survey methods. Materials and methods. Analytical studies of ambient air pollution were performed using the FOCUS GC-DSQ-II chromatography-mass spectrometer. Olfacto-odourimetric studies of the presence and intensity of odour in the area of the enterprises were carried out in accordance with the method of organoleptic control downwind at various distances from sources. The measurement of the odour level at the discharge of the coffee extract spray dryer was carried out by dynamic olfactometry on the ECOMA TO-8 olfactometer. The calculation of odour dispersion was implemented according to a program using a methodology for calculating concentrations of harmful substances in ambient air. Results. It was established that at the time of the research, the source of a persistent specific odour reaching the residential area was a coffee production enterprise. Up to seventy eight volatile organic compounds in concentrations not exceeding hygienic standards have been identified in the ambient air in the area of the enterprise’s location. Field olfacto-odorimetric studies and the conducted dispersion calculation indicate an offensive odour to be capable of causing “annoyance” to the population (3 points or higher with a probability of ≥ 5% according to the results of field studies or ≥ 3.5 OU (odour units) according to the calculation results) spreads up to 4 km from the main source of emissions. Limitations. The main limitation of the study is the peculiarities of the operating mode of different enterprises, which makes it difficult to fully assess the environmental situation in the area of their location at the time of the research. Conclusion. The results of these studies indicate the use of various methodological approaches (field olfacto-odorimetric measurements, calculation of odour dispersion), along with conducting population surveys, to significantly expand the possibilities of instrumental analysis for an objective assessment of ambient air pollution by complex multicomponent mixtures of odorous substances.
