Jurassic dikes of Vestfjella, western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica: Geochemical tracing of ferropicrite sources

Abstract: Ferropicrites and their differentiates make up a geochemically distinctive group of dikes that crosscut Jurassic continental flood basalts of the Karoo large igneous province at Vestfjella, western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. The Vestfjella ferropicrites can be divided into two geochemical types: The depleted ferropicrites have (La/Sm) N of 1.2-1.3, (Sm/Yb) N of 4.5, initial ε Nd from +7 to +8, initial ε Sr from-18 to-19, and show relative depletion of highly incompatible elements, but pronounced enrichmen… Show more

“…Some of the magma types show geochemical similarities with the larger Karoo CFB formations found on the African side of the Jurassic rift system (e.g., Luttinen and Furnes, 2000;Riley et al, 2005). Four intrusive magma types from western Dronning Maud Land show evidence of limited lithospheric interaction and derivation of the parental magmas from sublithospheric sources: 1) The Vestfjella depleted ferropicrite suite, 2) Vestfjella Low-Nb dykes, 3) The Vestfjella enriched ferropicrite suite, and 4) Ahlmannryggen Group 3 dykes (Riley et al, 2005;Heinonen and Luttinen, 2008;Luttinen et al, 2015). The first two originated from a common depleted (upper mantle) source Luttinen et al, 2015) and the latter two derive from distinct pyroxene-rich (recycled) mantle sources (Heinonen et al, , 2013(Heinonen et al, , 2014.…”

“…Inputting the parental melt compositions and melting pressures (5-6 GPa) suggested for the depleted ferropicrite suite by to equations (3) and (4) Alternatively, T p can be calculated with the PRIMELT3 software (Herzberg and Asimow, 2015) which gives similar liquidus temperatures for sample AL/B1b-03 as suggested by the Al-inolivine thermometer (see section 5.2.). As with the equations of Putirka et al (2007), PRIMELT3 suggests high-degree melting of a garnet peridotite source (F = 31 %) for the parental melt of the sample AL/B1b-03, and the resulting T p is ~1630 °C (whole-rock composition of AL/B1b-03 used as an input; Heinonen and Luttinen, 2008).…”

“…In the Antarctic segment of the Karoo LIP ( Fig. 1), however, some primitive and nearly uncontaminated dike suites of sublithospheric geochemical character have been described (Heinonen and Luttinen, 2008;Luttinen and Furnes, 2000;Luttinen et al, 1998;Riley et al, 2005). At Ahlmannryggen, basaltic and picritic dikes crosscut the local Precambrian basement and have been sub-divided into four distinct geochemical groups (Groups 1-4; Riley et al, 2005).…”
