Abstract: A joint Spanish‐American geophysical cruise north of the Virgin Islands has delineated the fracture pattern of the North American plate as it is overrun by the northeast corner of the Caribbean plate. Previously known fractures parallel to the plate boundary (approximately east‐west) probably result from plate flexure, while newly defined crossing fractures (north‐northeast) may be related to extension produced by the compound bend of the North American plate.
