Issues concerning Landowner Management Plan Adoption Decisions: A Recursive Bivariate Probit Approach

Abstract: Despite the likely benefits of having a written forest management plan, a small number of landowners in the United States have the one. A recursive bivariate probit model was used to identify the possible relationship between landowners' decision to obtain a management plan and their interest in future timber harvesting. Our study results based on recursive bivariate model suggest that landowners having larger land ownerships, longer forest ownership tenure, and higher education were more likely to have a fore… Show more

“…The decision of forest owners to harvest/not harvest timber is guided by many factors [12,[30][31][32]. Among many variables, timber price, forest size, distance to property, ownership objectives, policy awareness, membership in a forest organization, and socio-economic factors such as age, gender, education, income, and net wealth have been emphasized in the following studies [22,31,[33][34][35]. However, their reported magnitude and statistical significance on timber harvesting intentions and intensities are not consistent across studies [30,36].…”

“…Lastly, in order to simultaneously estimate the determinants and impact of risk management strategies adoption, while accounting for both observable and unobservable factors in an efficient manner, endogenous switching regression model approach (Lokshin and Sajaia, 2004) was used for output being a continuous outcome. In the case of food security being a binary outcome, a recursive bivariate probit model was used (Joshi et al, 2015). Risk management strategies considered in this study are financial liquidity reservation (savings), membership of professional association (such as Cooperative societies) and following required standard in the establishment of fish farm.…”

“…The current paper aims to contribute to filling this research gap. This paper also makes a contribution by applying of empirical estimation approach following recent advances such as [34,40,49,53,61] in econometrics for analysing the impact.…”
