Isolation of Candida spp from vaginal microbiota of healthy canine females during estrous cycle

Abstract: Yeasts are commensal organisms found in the skin, genital and gastrointestinal tracts, and other mucosa in mammalians. Candida spp has been frequently isolated from domestic and sylvan animals. Yeast isolation from vaginal mucus is frequent in women, especially of Candida genus. In canine females, however, studies about vaginal fungal microbiota are rare and the connection with estrous cycle is unknown. The purpose of this study was to isolate yeast 5 of Candida genus from healthy canine females and identify t… Show more

“…Generally, lipophilic M. pachydermatis is the main colonizing yeast in healthy and also in diseased dogs [31]. Only a few times lipid-dependent Malassezia yeasts (M. furfur, M. nana and M. obtusa) were identified [11,12,14,15,36].…”

“…However, Pinter and Noble (1998) mentioned a relation among oral diseases in dogs and this yeast in a stomatitis, pharyngitis and tonsillitis case. M. pachydermatis is the most widely studied yeast species in animals, and it is thought to make part of the microbiota of various anatomical sites, mainly the external ear and skin (Nobre et al , 1998; Bond et al , 2000; Cleff et al , 2005). However, Nobre et al (1998) reported that at an imbalance condition between host and microorganisms occurs, this yeast can turns pathogenic due to a cell number increase referred to a predisposing factor.…”
