Toxic contaminants from intense industrial operations are entering wetlands, harming human health and biodiversity. Macrophytes serve as principal producers in aquatic environments including natural wetlands, providing shelter, food, and, most crucially, intricate relationships with the surrounding microbial assemblage for support and microorganisms attachment. Wetlands have been nature's kidneys, for filtering water. Recent research has examined macrophytes' phytoremediation abilities. With recent improvements focused on engineered wetland technology, microbiological characterization, and genetic engineering, phytoremediation strategies have also benefited. However, little research has examined the role surrounding microbial population play on macrophyte efficiency in pollutant degradation, the extent and even mechanisms of these interactions, and their potential utility in wastewater treatment of diverse industrial effluents. Our bid for greener solutions implies that macrophyte-microorganisms’ interspecific interactions for in situ treatment of effluents should be optimised to remove contaminants before discharge in natural waterbodies or for recycle water usage. This review provides for the varied types of plants and microbial interspecific interactions beneficial to effective phytoremediation processes in artificial wetland design as well as considerations and modifications in constructed wetland designs necessary to improve the bioremediation processes. Additionally, the review discusses the latest advancements in genetic engineering techniques that can enhance the effectiveness of phyto-assisted wastewater treatment. We will also explore the potential utilisation of invasive species for their demonstrated ability to remove pollutants in the controlled setting of constructed wetlands.

Endophytic fungi are microorganisms that live inside plants, establishing a mutualistic relationship, where both benefit from this interaction. They require protection and nutrients from host plants, and in return fungi can contribute to host's growth and nutrient uptake. In addition, they can improve plant tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses and increase plant resistance to insects and pests. Endophytic fungi produce bioactive compounds similar to those of the host plant. The economic exploitation of these bioactive compounds is much promising. These bioactive products are related to sustainable production systems and to the development of new substances with strong pharmacological properties such as antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antiparasitic, antidiabetic and immunosuppressant, including response to resistant microorganisms. This study is a descriptive review, having as aim to approach the main benefits of endophytic fungi for host plants, as well as the biotechnological application of the bioactive compounds produced by them. The prospection of endophytic in extreme environment could result in discovery of new bioactive compounds with surprising potential for biotechnology area. So, the development of new research frontiers in this issue is indispensable for the sustainable exploitation of the great benefits that these microorganisms could provide to the science.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) complex. The global TB epidemic has been aggravated by the emergence of disease outbreaks caused by multi-drug resistant and extensively drug-resistant strains. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in-vitro, anti-TB activity of leaves of Psychotria sarmentosa, Aponogeton crispus and the mushrooms Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus cystidiosus found in Sri Lanka. Leaves of Psychotria sarmentosa, Aponogeton crispus and the mushrooms; Pleurotus ostreatus and P. cystidiosus were dried until a constant weight and 120 g each were taken to prepare crude extracts with distilled water (1.9 L) by heating at a moderate temperature and the final volume was reduced to 240 ml. Freeze dried aqueous extracts were incorporated in Middle Brook 7H11 medium (1mg/ml) using pour plate method.Two ten-fold dilutions (10-2 and 10-4) of standard H37Rv Mtb suspensions were inoculated on Middle Brook 7H11 media with the crude extracts. The plates were incubated at 37 0C for 4 weeks until visible appearance of Mtb colonies. The inhibitory effect of each extract was calculated by the mean reduction of number of colonies on extract containing medium compared to extract-free control medium. Accordingly, the highest mean percentage inhibition was shown by P. sarmentosa (71.0 %). The mean percentage inhibition exerted by A. crispus, P. ostreatus and P. cystidiosus were 46.0 %, 43.4 % and 39.5 % respectively. Therefore, freeze-dried aqueous extract from leaves of P. sarmentosa has certain activity against the tested standard mycobacterial strain and has a potential to be used as an anti-TB drug component.
