Isogenic lines in fish – a critical review

Abstract: An isogenic line is a group of animals with an identical genotype, and its use is widely accepted for bioresearch standardization. Isogenic lines in fish can be generated within two generations via uniparental inheritance and can facilitate studies for which standardization and consistency are required. The availability and use of isogenic lines is limited, but isogenic lines in some fish species have been generated. Their power has been demonstrated in fields including human disease modelling, drug developmen… Show more

“…More advanced application of surrogacy such as production of donor-derived gametes from cryopreserved germ cells, or production of monosex female stocks based on oogonia transplantation carrying XX chromosomes will be attempted further. Of the utmost importance, results of this study give us a positive outlook for oncoming reproduction of gold sh chimeras which received cells from a homozygous individual when production of genetically identical gametes and creation of an isogenic line is foreseen [54]. On the other hand, potential of highly fertile common carp recipients will be advantageous to rapidly increase production of small gold sh.…”

“…Doubled haploid isogenic lines have been established in several fish species (Franěk et al, 2019). They offer unparalleled opportunities for a number of in-depth studies of complex traits.…”

“…Poor reproductive performance of doubled haploid progenitors has been highlighted as a major limitation in the production of isogenic lines [9,60]. The relative fecundity (eggs/kg female bodyweight) of doubled haploid rainbow trout was normal and even significantly higher than controls [7], but with observations of sterile and hypofertile fish, and homozygous carp females had severe gonadal defects and less than 10% could be reproduced [5].…”
