Is total lymphocyte count related to nutritional markers in hospitalized older adults?

Abstract: BACKGROUND Older patients are commonly malnourished during hospital stay, and a high prevalence of malnutrition is found in hospitalized patients aged more than 65 years. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether total lymphocyte count is related to other nutritional markers in hospitalized older adults. METHODS Hospitalized older adults (N=131) were recruited for a cross-sectional study. Their nutritional status was assessed by the Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS), anthropometry, and total lymphocyte count. The stat… Show more

“…To elucidate this issue, our current study adjusted for confounding factors including statin use, LDL and HDL values, and a higher CONUT score was still independently associated with the risk of a future adverse event in CAD patients after PCI. Lymphocyte counts reflect the host immunity and have been studied with respect to their association with nutritional status [29]. Lymphocytopenia may reflect neurohormonal activation in CAD patients and may represent a marker of the physiological stress response [30,31].…”

“…Protein energy malnutrition has been reported to downregulate protein/hormone and antibody synthesis [36,37], leading to suppression of both B-lymphocyte differentiation [38] and T-lymphocyte regulation [39]. In fact, the total lymphocyte count is correlated with anthropometric nutritional indicators, such as mid-upper arm circumference and triceps skinfold thickness [40]. In addition, the total lymphocyte count is utilized as an immune marker, and is known to correlate with the CD4+ lymphocyte count [41,42].…”

“…The lymphocyte count reflects both the nutritional status and the immune function of patients. A decline in lymphocyte count can be caused by either malnutrition or poor cellular immune function 13 . Many scholars reported that the OPNI plays an important role in the prognosis evaluation of digestive system neoplasms.…”
