Is Root Catalase a Bifunctional Catalase-Peroxidase?

Abstract: Plant catalases exhibit spatial and temporal distribution of their activity. Moreover, except from the typical monofunctional catalase, a bifunctional catalase-peroxidase has been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the leaf and root catalases from six different plant species (Lactuca sativa, Cichorium endivia, Apium graveolens, Petroselinum crispum, Lycopersicon esculentum, and Solanum melongena) correspond to the monofunctional or the bifunctional type based on their sensitivity to the… Show more

“…(22) We found a report in the PubMed database that was allegedly associated with low catalase activity and reduced catalase protection against free radicals in the body. (5,23) However, the data of the present study did not show a significant association between the CAT gene and the clinical condition of the HbE/thalassemia β patients. In the case of minor thalassemia, there is also a change in oxidative reactions, which are thought to be associated with hypochromic microcytic anemia, similar to iron deficiency anemia.…”

“…In tobacco, another isoform of CAT, which has enhanced peroxidatic activity (47), was reported to increase in seedlings grown at high CO 2 (46). Decreased sensitivity to 3-aminotriazole, an inhibitor of the classical CAT reaction, suggests that the root isoforms may have greater bifunctional peroxidase activities (20).…”

“…Salt tolerant plants maintain physiological levels of H 2 O 2 by deploying multiple enzymatic (SOD, CAT, GPOD, APOD, and GR) and non-enzymatic (ascorbate and glutathione) components of an antioxidant defense system [ 60 ]. CAT is a monofunctional enzyme and converts two molecules of H 2 O 2 into one molecule of water and molecular oxygen each [ 73 ]. CAT removes the bulk of the H 2 O 2 from the system, but has a low affinity for H 2 O 2 due to its high K m value for H 2 O 2 [ 74 ].…”
