Iron therapy for improving psychomotor development and cognitive function in children under the age of three with iron deficiency anaemia.

Effects of food supplementation on cognitive function, cerebral blood flow, and nutritional status in young children at risk of undernutrition: randomized controlled trial

“…Compared with traditional feeding practices, NEWSUP improved working memory among children younger than 4 in the intention-to-treat analysis, and in the predefined per protocol analysis of the children who consumed at least 75% of their supplement (rate ratio 1.25, 95% confidence interval 1.06 to 1.47). Furthermore, the effects seemed to be unrelated to changes in hemoglobin, a finding that is consistent with previous documentation of no effect of supplementary iron on working memory in children with anemia 105. Working memory is a core executive function, making this an important benefit for children’s education and national development.…”

The effect of longer-term treatment remains unclear" (344). The lack of a consistent response to iron therapy once IDA is present is consistent with the premise that prevention of IDA in the first place or earlier identification and treatment may be necessary to recover neural function acutely and prevent long-term effects.…”
