IPM synchronous machine drive response to a single-phase open circuit fault

Abstract: Abstract-This paper investigates the steady-state and dynamic response of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous machine drive to a single-phase open-circuit fault. This fault results in rotational electromagnetic asymmetry on both the stator and rotor, making it difficult to analyze using classical -transformation techniques. This paper presents a new synchronous-frame machine model that is capable of handling this highly asymmetrical fault condition, including the effects of axis magnetic saturation.… Show more

“…A modulation method with reduced input current ripple can be used for the converter [5]. The fault detection methods for the inverter circuits and diagnosis algorithms for matrix converter can be carried out fast and simply [8][9][10]. Once the open-circuited fault occurs in one phase on an inverter circuit, such as open switch fault, open-phase fault and so on, it is detected immediately.…”

“…The steady state and dynamic response of a PMSM drive to a single phase open-circuit fault is investigated in [3]. In addition, two alternative post-fault control strategies are studied: opening all of the inverter switches and shorting the two remaining unfaulted phases together using the inverter switches.…”

“…Researchers in references [7]- [10] have used various models or computer simulation techniques to detect faults in PM motors. A modified dq model, which used current rather than flux linkages as state variables, is presented in [9] for visualizing the effects of single phasing in IPM motors. The computer simulation is performed in [10] to investigate the effects of inverter faults on voltages, currents, and torques of the IPM motor during the flux-weakening mode of operation.…”
