Mono-dispersed ceria (CeO 2) hollow nanospheres about 400 nm have been prepared via a facile one-step hydrothermal method, wherein cerium nitrate hexahydrate (Ce(NO 3) 3 •6H 2 O) was used as cerium sources with the assistance of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the ethylene glycol aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and Fourier transform infrared results indicate that PVP can improve the dispersion and control the morphology and sizes of CeO 2 hollow nanospheres as a surfactant, and the internal diameter of CeO 2 hollow nanosphere gradually increases with reaction time. Based on the time-dependent experiment, the formation mechanism was proposed and discussed. These CeO 2 hollow nanospheres show an excellent adsorption rate of heavy metal ions for Cr(VI) and the adsorption rate is about 70%. The CeO 2 hollow nanospheres also had exhibited superior performance in the degradation of methyl orange dye.

There is an ever‐increasing demand for energy storage combined with high energy density, long lifespan, and low cost. Design and fabrication of electrode materials with characteristics of scale and fast charge (electrons and ions) access to electrochemically active site are of great importance. The aerosol‐spray synthesis technique has shown considerable promise as an attractive, cost‐effective, and scalable route for material preparation. Particles with complex architectures and chemistry can be produced by simply using an economical, continuous, and rapid process. Here, recent advances of the industrially viable aerosol‐spray‐pyrolysis method are summarized with regard to structure design and processing of electrode materials in the field of energy storage. Beginning with an introduction to the principles, characteristics, and process parameters of aerosol‐spray methods, the focus then moves to recent achievements to date in experimental exploration of fabricating a variety of electrode materials for energy‐storage devices, including lithium‐ion batteries, sodium‐ion batteries, supercapacitors, and lithium–sulfur batteries. Also discussed are the current status, directions, and prospects for future exploration of material synthesis using aerosol‐spray techniques. Aerosol‐spray pyrolysis represents an important breakthrough in multidimensional structure design, and exhibits incredible versatility for material fabrication for high‐performance energy‐storage devices.

Monodispersed hollow polymer microspheres (HPMs) and hollow carbon microspheres (HCMs) are prepared by a low-cost and rapid spray-drying technique using resorcinol-formaldehyde as precursors. By spraying the precursor solution into a high-temperature chamber, micrometer-scale hollow structure can be immediately obtained. To achieve the required morphology, the factors of influencing the products morphology and purity are systematically optimized. The as-obtained HPMs have a low bulk density of 0.089 g/cm 3 , narrow particle size distribution of 15 to 80 μm with a mean size of 37 μm, a high floatation ratio of 96.3% and high mechanical strength. Followed by a simple carbonization, HCMs with a bulk density of ca. 0.1 g/cm 3 and a mean size of 23 µm are achieved. This spray-drying strategy could drastically reduce their production times and costs, enabling continuous and scalable synthesis of hollow microspheres for practical use. As a proof-of-concept application, a series of syntactic foam consisting of HPMs and HCMs as fillers and phenolic resin as matrix are prepared via a hot-press molding. The resulting composite materials have low bulk densities but improved mechanical properties, which highlights the possibility for the manufacturing of lightweight materials using these kinds of hollow microspheres.
