“…These areas receive dopamine input from VTA (Lammel et al 2014 ), and recent evidence indicates that D1 receptor signalling in these regions regulates contextual fear conditioning (Ikegami et al 2014 ). Our results add to a growing body of evidence indicating that contextual fear processing is modulated by both D1- and D2-like receptor signalling (Biojone et al 2011 ; de Souza Caetano et al 2013 ; Colombo et al 2013 ; Wen et al 2014 ).…”

“…On the other hand, the results could be related to how the dHPC and vHPC were microdissected ( Fig 3B), as vHPC slices were richer in CA3 compared to dHPC slices. Obliteration of dopaminergic systems in CA3 has been shown to affect consolidation, but not acquisition of memory (64). We cannot, however, entirely exclude effects on innate fear, but rather suggest the main effect is on memory.…”

“…The dorsal (dorsorostral) VTA, by contrast, projects predominantly to the amygdala, hippocampal formation and entorhinal region (Braak and Del Tredici, 2008 ). We are not disregarding the fact that the hippocampus is involved in the encoding of associative fear memory (Wen et al, 2015 ) and that the former circuit also recruits this structure (Abraham et al, 2014 ), however, the paradigm we implemented in the current study did not include a distinct aversive component, and therefore we assume that encoding of the associative learning experience was mediated by the latter projections from the VTA, thus possibly circumventing an intensive contribution of the nucleus accumbens.…”

“…Dose-dependent beneficial and debilitatory effects of receptor antagonism for spatial reference memory have also been described (Setlow and McGaugh, 1999 , 2000 ). This receptor may also be preferentially involved in the processing of aversive memories (Jocham et al, 2014 ; Wen et al, 2015 ).…”
