Investigation of Welding Parameters of Dissimilar Weld of SS316 and ASTM A36 Joint Using a Grey-Based Taguchi Optimization Approach

Abstract: A grey-based Taguchi method was applied to investigate the optimal operating conditions in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) to join SS316 and ASTM A36. This work aims to set optimal parameters for the mechanical properties of the weld joint. The effects of various welding factors on electrode type, welding current, arc welding, and welding speed have to be characterized and optimized to achieve an optimum condition. An L9 orthogonal array was used to group the various components. The mechanical properties of … Show more

“…The statistical analysis reveals that the p-value for both voltage and travel speed is less than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant effect. Furthermore, the F-value is higher than 3.55, which exceeds the nominal F-table value of 3.55 as established by Pratiwi et al [56]. This suggests a strong statistical significance for voltage and travel speed, per their findings.…”

“…This analysis was done to evaluate and verify any improvement of physical and mechanical characteristics. The predicted GRG value (0.88) in table 17 was computed using the equation (11) [56,57]. Where m g refers to the mean GRG, i g refers to the mean GRG at an optimal level of i th factor, and n are the factors that have a significant impact on quality responses.…”

“…The approach for this study comprises of the use of an automated Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding procedure to combine stainless steel SS 316 with low alloy steel AISI 4140. Welding parameters, including current, welding speed, wire feed speed, and gas ow rate are changed within a set range [33][34][35]. Experimentation and statistical analysis are then used to evaluate the weld quality and mechanical qualities.…”

“…The article of Bhandari et al [26] was aimed at developing a SMAW process for joining dissimilar plates (SA516 and AISI304L), using coated electrodes. Pratiwi et al recently published [27] an experimental study with the aim of optimizing the SMAW process parameters for welding ASTM A36 mild steel to AISI 316 austenitic steel.…”
