The use of metal matrix composites (MMCs) in a variety of products is significantly increasing with time due to the fact that their properties can be tailored and designed to suit specific applications. However, the future usage of MMC products is very much dependent on their beneficial aspects and hence it is critical to ensure in a robust repeatable manner the superior physical property advantages compared to conventional unreinforced monolithic metal counterparts. Although numerous routes are available for production of MMC products, each of them has their own advantages and disadvantages. This article provides an overview of advanced production routes for MMCs. The discussion also highlights challenges and presents a future prospectus for MMCs. Powder metallurgy and casting routes are still extensively used for production of MMCs. Aluminum alloys are today the most commonly used matrix materials in MMC products.Carbides (eg, SiC, TiC, and B 4 C), carbon allotropes (eg, CNTs and graphene), and alumina (Al 2 O 3) are currently the most used reinforcement materials. Nevertheless, the use of nano and of hybrid reinforcements are seeing increased usage in niche applications. Additive manufacturing (AM) is discussed as a novel production route for MMC products. This process represents a promising method for the production of MMC products.

This study investigates the development of Al6061-based Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites (HMMCs) reinforced with nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) to enhance their mechanical properties. Employing the stir casting method, the research aimed to achieve a homogeneous distribution of Ni and Cr particles, varying from 1 to 3 wt.%, in the Al6061 matrix. Additional elements like graphite (up to 3 wt.%) and magnesium (1 wt.%) were incorporated to improve selflubrication and wettability. The fabrication process involved precise temperature control at 750°C and automatic stirring to ensure even dispersion of the reinforcing particles. The composites were then molded, solidified, and prepared for mechanical testing. SEM-EDS analysis was utilized to analyze the elements' distribution and the composites' microstructural integrity. Mechanical tests, including tensile, flexural, and hardness tests, followed ASTM standards. Significant findings revealed that the specimen with two wt.% Ni and two wt.% Cr (designated as SM2) demonstrated the most balanced improvement in mechanical properties: a tensile strength of 236.08 MPa, a flexural strength of 417.70 MPa, and a hardness of 127.00 HRB. However, an increase in Ni and Cr content beyond 4 wt.% led to non-homogeneous dispersion, manifesting as cracks, voids, and agglomeration, negatively impacting ductility and elongation properties. The study's unique contribution lies in its detailed examination of the effects of varying Ni and Cr concentrations on the mechanical properties of Al6061-based composites, providing valuable insights for material optimization in highperformance applications. This research underscores the delicate balance required in composite material design, particularly in enhancing specific mechanical properties without compromising overall material integrity. It provides crucial insights into the role of Ni and Cr reinforcements in Al6061 composites, highlighting their potential for engineering applications that demand high strength, flexibility, and hardness.

Aluminium based hybrid nanocomposites can be employed in many applications owing to their desirable traits. Depending on the constituents of the hybrid metal matrix composites, they must be tested for their wear performance since there is a high chance that these materials will experience rapid wear. Determining the tribological behaviour of AA6061/ 2 wt. % SiCp nanocomposite and AA6061/2wt. % SiCp/2 wt. % graphite hybrid nanocomposite is the prime objective of this study. With AA6061 as the metal matrix and nano sized silicon carbide, graphite particles as primary and secondary reinforcements respectively, all the composite samples have been fabricated using ultrasonic assisted stir casting. Evaluation of the wear behaviour of the aforementioned materials is done using the two body abrasive wear tests conducted on a pin-on-disc apparatus. Wear coefficients and friction coefficients have been computed and were also analyzed with respect to various parameters. Additionally, wear mechanisms involved were deciphered and subsequently, wear maps have been developed for all the samples. The sample consisting 2 wt. % SiC and 2 wt. % graphite was found to have excellent wear resistance among all. Additionally, coefficient of friction was the lowest for the aforementioned sample itself.
