Abstract: This paper describes the effects of α-Al2O3 nanosheets on the direct current voltage breakdown strength and space charge accumulation in crosslinked polyethylene/α-Al2O3 nanocomposites. The α-Al2O3 nanosheets with a uniform size and high aspect ratio were synthesized, surface-modified, and characterized. The α-Al2O3 nanosheets were uniformly distributed into a crosslinked polyethylene matrix by mechanical blending and hot-press crosslinking. Direct current breakdown testing, electrical conductivity tests, and … Show more

“…Therefore, an appropriate content exists to optimize the E b and energy storage performance of the polymer dielectrics. [149][150][151][152] To sum up, for simple organic-inorganic blends, diverse variables of inorganic fillers play a vital role in improving material properties, using computational simulation to understand and predict the breakdown process and electric field distribution in organic polymers randomly filled with inorganic fillers of different variables. It can optimize the E b and energy storage performance of the dielectrics to the maximum extent.…”

“…Space charge evolves in the system due to the DC electrode and becomes ionized by the insulation's impurities. This yields partial discharge events within the insulation or in close proximity to the conductor [26]. Ultimately, this contributes to accelerated material degradation and premature failure of the insulation [26][27][28].…”

Ultimately, this contributes to accelerated material degradation and premature failure of the insulation [26][27][28]. Hence, the arrester housing should offer desirable pollution behaviour (hydrophobicity is advantageous) to reduce housing flash over events.…”
