Abstract: Diet and nutrition are important factors in the promotion and maintenance of good health throughout the entire life course. A plant-based diet may be able to prevent and treat chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, obesity, chronic inflammation and cancer. Phytonutrient rich foods are found in traditional African diet which is mostly vegetarian, and most of these food plants are often used for medicinal purposes. This review focuses on a peculiar plant Moringa oleifera, called the “… Show more

“…Exploitation of novel nutraceuticals for the prevention and treatment of chronic cardiometabolic diseases like T2DM and the metabolic syndrome is currently very relevant and is the focus of intense research [15][16][17][18][19][20]. An important source of these products is represented by extracts derived from plants traditionally used in some African countries for nutritional and medicinal purposes [21], and currently under characterization in terms of biochemical and nutraceutical properties [6,[8][9][10]. Moreover, since these plant extracts may exhibit a relevant antioxidant activity [6,9,10], they could represent a specific countermeasure to control excessive ROS generation, which is linked to insulin resistance in different pathological conditions (obesity, T2DM, and metabolic syndrome) [22,23].…”

“…In turn, M. oleifera is a well-known herbal plant in Africa and Asia, whose leaves contain a diverse mixture of bioactive phytochemicals such as phenolic acids (caffeic acid, gallic acid), flavonoids (e.g., quercetin, kaempferol, and catechins), saponins, tannins, vitamins, and carotenoids. They have been reported to underlie the health protective potential of Moringa [119] and may contribute to the alleviation of vanadium-mediated toxicity.…”

“…These chemical compounds mainly include three groups: methylene, hydroxyl (-OH) and amino ). However, the chemical composition depends on the cultivation climate, the time of harvest, the biotype of the plant, and finally, the extraction process [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].…”
