Investigation into the use of thermoelectric modules as an alternative to conventional fluxmeters: Application to convective and radiative heat flux in buildings

Abstract: The present work aims to propose the use of Peltier modules for the superficial heat flux measurement, as an alternative to conventional heat flux sensors. In this study, the function of Peltier modules (TEM) as heat flux sensors is compared to the Captec® heat flux sensors (FGT), based on the premise that conventional heat flux sensors such as Captec® have been proven to have acceptable performance for the heat flux measurement, i.e., conduction, convection and radiation. A simple measurement device and a sim… Show more

“…In recent years, thermoelectric modules (TEMs) have seen more use as a low-cost alternative for measuring heat flux. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] While TEMs are used in a wide variety of applications, they are most commonly used as either a cooler or a power generator. 12,13 Thermoelectric coolers function as a solid state heat pump by receiving electrical power and uses the cold side of the TEM to remove heat from a system.…”

“…On the other hand, a thermoelectric generator work as a solid state heat engine and takes advantage of the Seebeck effect to generate electrical power by means of a temperature difference. It should be noted that commercially available thermoelectric heat fluxmeters, including the previous attempts to use a TEM for heat flux measurement, are based on the Seebeck effect; although, the measured electrical voltage is used to determine the heat flux instead of generating power 5,7,[9][10][11] .…”

“…It has an average annual wind speed of 2.5 m/s and an average annual global radiation of 4.96 kWh/m 2 -day [45].Due to the way the TERMOFLUX LC temperature and thermal flow measurement module was designed, it was only capable of performing measurements of positive voltages. Because of the Seebeck effect, an electrical answer was generated when thermal flow passes through the Peltier plate[46]. Disturbances were caused by the reverse direction of the heat flow on the external surface of the roof of each chamber.…”
