“…As well known in EVOH, the insertion of ethylene sequences into vinyl alcohol segments reduces the barrier property to a certain extent and disrupts the compact packing of vinyl alcohol segments 11,12 . But insertion of ethylene segments can effectively improve the thermal stability of vinyl acohol segments which caused by the narrow processing window and the degradation temperature is closed to melting temperature 13–15 . To study the effect of molecular structure on ethylene‐vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) thermal stability during processing, EVOH samples with different molecular weights and comonomer distributions were prepared by solubility fractionation from two different commercial materials, and then, the structure features of samples were characterized by 1H‐NMR, viscometry, differential scanning calorimetry, and, especially, successive self‐nucleation and annealing. Their thermal stabilities were further analyzed by isothermal oxygen treatment and thermogravimetry. Attenuated total internal reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV were used to obverse the structural changes in samples (the formation of chromogenic groups: CO and CC). According to the results of isothermal oxygen treatment at 200°C, at the same ethylene content, low‐molecular‐weight samples have worse thermal stability, which were extremely easy to yellowing and form insoluble gel. To investigate the structure differences between the low‐molecular‐weight samples, it was found that long vinyl alcohol segments may not worsen the thermal stability in the conditions of the same ethylene content. But samples with a uniform distribution of ethylene segments and a certain length of ethylene segments will have better thermal stability, which makes it more difficult to form carbonyl even diketene conjugation structure.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was modified using D‐mannitol (DM) and 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazole bromide (BMIMBr) as the complex plasticizer (DB), and PVA/DB composite was prepared. The plasticizing effect of DB on PVA was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), differntial scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermos gravimetric analysis (TGA) and melt flow indexer (MI). FT‐IR analysis indicated that Br− of BMIMBr and OH of DM could form H‐bonds with OH of PVA. With the increase of DB, the melt temperature (Tm2) and crystallization temperature (Tc1) of PVA/DB composite decreased, the initial thermal decomposition temperatures (Td), thermal processing window (ΔT) and MI values increased respectively. Based on above studies, the influence of DB content on rheological properties of PVA/DB composite was investigated by the capillary rheometer. The result displayed that apparent viscosity of PVA/DB composite decreased with increasing DB content, shear rate and measured temperature. The non‐Newtonian index (n) increased and structural viscosity index (Δη) decreased with the increase of measured temperature and DB. The viscous flow activation energy (Eη) decreased as the shear rate and DB content increased. When the measured temperature, DB content and shear rate were in the range of Tm2+30 −Tm2+35 °C, 40–50 wt% and 764.8–1504.9 s−1, respectively, the spinnability of PVA/DB composite was optimal, which will lay a theoretical foundation for the exploration of melt spinning process in the future.
