Investigating Research Streams of Conjoint Analysis: A Bibliometric Study

Abstract: Conjoint analysis (CA) is one of the most important methods for preference elicitation. In this paper we investigate the intellectual structure within the conjoint analytical research community. Analyses based on single papers provide a method-based overview of streams of conjoint research. By using novel bibliometric techniques in this field we complement findings of existing reviews. We use co-citation and factor analysis of the most cited articles in SSCI to identify the most important articles and research… Show more

“…Citation networks generally exist in three different forms: journal citation, author citation, and document citation. Our focus on the citation network at the level of single publications [Teichert and Shehu, 2010] rather than on the aggregated journal or author level was so we could gauge the importance of single publications in the field, based on our careful selection of a sufficiently large sample (cf. Pilkington and Fitzgerald, 2006;Pilkington and Meredith, 2009).…”

“…This comprehensive picture of the entire research field is analyzed with regard to the network positions of respective authors and publications as well as to content and principal themes. Unlike in past reviews, our primary tool for exploring the state of the art is bibliometric analysis-an established tool for the structural analysis of a given research field [Culnan, 1986;Teichert and Shehu, 2010]. This allows us both to substantiate findings that have thus far been rather hypothetical (e.g., the central role of frameworks) and to produce novel insights into EA research and its interconnections.…”

“…The method has been used for decades in preference estimation, primarily in marketing research [22]. Today, it also is increasingly used in a number of other areas, including health care, food studies, and transportation [63]. Initially, conjoint analysis originated from decision problems that sought to produce reliable assessments of the respondents' preferences by comparing at least two features simultaneously, so that the respondent has to identify, evaluate, and decide on a trade-off between the two features.…”

“…This is e.g. the leading premise of the most widely applied market research method: conjoint analysis [30]. Consequently, we only utilize consumers' perceptions when assessing new fast food offerings.…”
