Intrameningioma metastasis as first clinical manifestation of occult primary breast carcinoma

Abstract: Metastasis from extracranial tumor into an intracranial primary tumor is an uncommon event. A predominant tendency of meningioma to be the host tumor for breast carcinoma has been found. In the current report, three cases of breast carcinoma metastatic to intracranial meningiomas are described. In our cases, metastasis in meningioma was the first clinical manifestation of the occult primitive breast carcinoma. We review widely the literature concerning such rare occurrences and discuss all the postulated patho… Show more

“…3 RCC and meningioma are the most common visceral and intracranial recipients of metastasis, respectively, although the mechanism of tumor-to-tumor metastasis is not well understood. 2,4,5 In theory, both HAB and meningioma are good recipients of RCC because they have abundant vascularization, slow growth and often remain unnoticed for a long time. 2,4,5 Metastatic RCC to HAB of the CNS was first reported in 1992, in a patient with VHL disease.…”

“…Since the first case was described by Berent in 1902, more than 100 intracranial tumors have been reported (3,4,6,12,15). Meningiomas account for about two-thirds of those tumors (15), whereas only six cases of intracranial schwannoma have been reported (6,13,23,25,26).…”

“…Most papers published on this subject have been case reports or a small case series, [2][3][4][7][8][9][10][11] and the clinical features and distinctive radiological characteristics of this condition have not been described in detail. There are few case reports of cancer metastasizing to an intracranial meningioma; however, only two cases of metastasis to a spinal meningioma appear in the literature.…”
