Intralesional corticosteroids in the treatment of nodulocystic acne

Abstract: We evaluated the effectiveness of intralesional injections of corticosteroids in the therapy for nodulocystic acne. Triamcinolone acetonide at a concentration of 0.63 mg/mL was as efficacious as a higher concentration of 2.5 mg/mL. Betamethasone phosphate had little, if any, effect on nodulocystic acne lesions at concentrations of 3.0, 1.5, and 0.75 mg/mL, when compared with saline controls.

“…They observed progressive reduction in the number and size of the hard exudates, and concluded that TA is effective in improving vision and inducing reabsorption of hard exudates. We assume that TA may not only prevent the accumulation of new hard exudates by reducing intraretinal vascular leakage, but may also help reabsorption of hard exudates, as it has treated chalazions or nodulocystic acne after intralesional injection [11,14]. Unfortunately, we have seen no continuity in the increase in baseline VA after the 6th month because of the recurrences of macular oedema, as reported in previous studies [4,7,12,13].…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…The studies reviewed in this literature review suggest that steroid injections can be an effective treatment for nodulocystic acne. The article by Levine and Rasmussen [3] reported a significant reduction in lesion size and severity, with an average reduction of 75% in lesion size, in patients treated with intralesional corticosteroids. Similarly, the study by Newman et al [8] found that intralesional corticosteroids can reduce inflammation and improve lesion appearance by suppressing inflammatory mediators and reducing collagenase activity.…”

“…The mainstay of treatment for nodulocystic acne includes oral isotretinoin in addition to intralesional corticosteroids for cystic lesions. Intralesional injections of triamcinolone hydrochloride have commonly been used to treat cystic acne for over 40 years 2 . Being a long‐acting steroid, it is considered to have a sustained anti‐inflammatory effect by virtue of prolonged contact with the cyst wall.…”
