“…4,6,12 We believe this is related in some part, to the large percentage of open fractures in our population (over 30 of the 57 infections were open fractures and 142 of 355 (40%) identified in the general cohort) compared to most of the previously published literature (38.7%, 4 22%, 5 and 20% 12 ). Additionally, the high incidence of 43C fractures (37/47, 78.7%) may also be a contributing factor for such a hig.…”

“…Regardless of the direction of the approach, each incision was minimised to limit disruption of the soft tissue envelope. The relationship between fracture pattern and operative approach is outlined in Tables 2 and 3. A variety of fixation techniques were used which ranged from cortical lag screws only (23), cortical lag screws with Complications were assessed by the lead author from the medical records. Forty-eight cases were followed-up to discharge (range 1.5 months-29 months; mean 9.14 months).…”

“…However, a review of other series revealed variable results. Bourne et al [5] reported a 25% non-union rate in type III fractures (Ruedi-Allgower [18]) treated by ORIF. On the other hand Sands [19] reported only one case of non-union in 64 patients treated with ORIF.…”
