Abstract. Twitter is today's most popular micro-blogging service on the Social Web. As people discuss various fresh topics, Twitter messages (tweets) can tell much about the current interests and concerns of a user. In this paper, we introduce TUMS, a Twitter-based User Modeling Service, that infers semantic user profiles from the messages people post on Twitter. It features topic detection and entity extraction for tweets and allows for further enrichment by linking tweets to news articles that describe the context of the tweets. TUMS is made publicly available as a Web application. It allows end-users to overview Twitter-based profiles in a structured way and allows them to see in which topics or entities a user was interested in a specific point in time. Furthermore, it provides Twitter-based user profiles in RDF format and allows applications to incorporate these profiles in order to adapt their functionality to the current interests of a user. Abstract. Online social networks have become an important part of the online activities on the web and one of the most influencing media. Unconstrained by physical spaces, online social networks offer to web users new interesting means to communicate, interact, and socialize. While these networks make frequent data sharing and inter-user communications instantly possible, privacy-related issues are their obvious much discussed immediate consequences. Although the notion of privacy may take different forms, the ultimate challenge is how to prevent privacy invasion when much personal information is available. In this context, we address privacy-related issues by resorting to social network analysis and link mining techniques. We first describe the fundamental of social networks, their common representations, and the main motivations associated with their use. Afterwards, we particularly show how privacy attacks can build on social network analysis and link mining techniques to reveal user-sensitive information. The chapter concludes with a discussion of some open challenges to address in future privacy-related works.

It is becoming increasingly important to facilitate the integrated management of user information. Exchanging user information across heterogeneous systems has many benefits, particularly in enhancing the quality and quantity of user information available for personalization. One common approach to user model interoperability is the use of mapping tools to manually build rich executable mappings between user models. A key problem with existing approaches is that the mapping tools are often too generic for these specialized tasks and do not provide any support to an administrator mapping in a specific domain such as user models. This paper presents a novel approach to user model interoperability which lowers the complexity and provides support to administrators in completing user model mappings. The domain-aware approach to user model interoperability incorporates interchangeable domain knowledge directly into the integration tools. This approach was implemented in a system called FUMES which is a mapping creation and execution environment that includes two domain-aware mechanisms; a canonical user model and user model mapping types. FUMES was deployed in an integration of existing user models and the domain-aware approach was then evaluated in a user study. The evaluation consisted of a direct comparison with a generic approach to user model interoperability which was applied using the commercial mapping tool, Altova Mapforce. The results of this evaluation demonstrate improvements in mapping accuracy and usability when using the domain-aware approach compared to the generic mapping approach.
